Raymond Leung
FOUNDER, BOARD PRESIDENT
Raymond Leung graduated from the University of California, Berkeley on May 2010 with Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Psychology and Peace and Conflict Studies. Leung unknowingly began walking a path toward peacebuilding at a young age. While growing up poor and unhappy in an apartment building owned by the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC) in San Francisco, his mother encouraged him to assist his neighbors, who were mostly immigrant families and elderly individuals. Through these personal volunteer experiences, Leung learned that everyone had been on the same boat and his situation was not as worse as he had always thought it had been.
Upon entering college, he developed a passion for community development work through further volunteer experiences with CCDC. One day at an annual neighborhood clean-up in Portsmouth Square, a park in Chinatown, he began to wonder why the people at the clean-up were mostly Chinese-Americans, leaving him to eventually ponder: wouldn’t it be nice to see people of different races, cultures and neighborhoods clean up each other’s neighborhoods together?
Then finally, the idea for the Neighborhoods Vision Project, then just a dream, sparked when Leung participated as a movie extra in a Spike Lee movie called, "Sucker Free City," which was filmed in San Francisco. The movie followed and weaved the fictional stories and conflicts of gang members of different ethnic SF neighborhoods. Again, this experience left him wondering, as many experiences had done, if people could come together to fight in conflicts, wouldn’t it be nice to see people from different neighborhoods come together in peace? These experiences eventually led to the pursuit and establishment of the "Neighborhoods Crossroads" student organization at San Francisco State University, and then to the "Neighborhood Vision Project" at the University of California, Berkeley. Since August 2003, he has kept the project and organization running and evolving...
